Björk Guðmundsdóttir OTF, known mononymously as Björk, is an Icelandic singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, and actress.
Björk was born on November 21, 1965, in Reykjavík, where she grew up. Her mother was activist Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, who protested against the development of Iceland’s Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant. Her father is Guðmundur Gunnarsson, a union leader, and electrician. They divorced when Björk was born and she moved with her mother to a commune.
Björk stepfather is Sævar Árnason, a former guitarist in the band Pops. At six, Björk enrolled at Reykjavík school Barnamúsíkskóli, where she studied classical piano and flute. After a school recital in which Björk sang Tina Charles’s 1976 hit “I Love to Love”, her teachers sent a recording of her singing the song to the RÚV radio station, which was then Iceland’s only radio station.
Björk children: Meet Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney, Sindri Eldon Þórsson
Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney and Sindri Eldon Þórsson are the two children of Björk before she meets her death.
Björk had a brief marriage with guitarist Þór Eldon. They had a son, Sindri Eldon Þórsson, born on 8 June 1986, the same day that the band was formed. They had divorced before the end of 1986 but continued to work together in the band.
Björk shares her daughter with ex Matthew Barney, who she parted ways with in 2013, following 13 years together. The singer has alluded to him running off with another woman in her 2015 heartbreak album, Vulnicura.
After the couple’s split, Isadora spent the autumn semester in her mother’s native Reykjavik and attended High School in New York’s Brooklyn Heights in spring. She also had a personal tutor, who accompanied her in Europe and the US.
