With such talented blood running through his veins, it’s no wonder Benedict Cumberbatch sought the limelight at an early age. However, his parents warned him that pursuing such a lifestyle was not without its hardships.
“Dad was working non-stop partly to pay for an education to basically pull me into line with the idea that it was madness to be … peripatetic, not being able to plan your family holidays, not knowing where the next income’s gonna come from, all the uncertainty which was on display in their lives,” the “Dr. Strange” star shared in a 2018 interview with Variety. But after Cumberbatch delivered a fantastic performance in his university’s production of “Amadeus,” his father, Timothy Carlton, had his worries put to rest and even told his son how thrilled he was to witness his career unfold.
Fast forward decades later, and it’s safe to assume Carlton and his wife, Wanda Ventham, are proud parents, to say the least. Even then, Cumberbatch was nervous about starring alongside his folks in the Season 3 premiere of his hit BBC mystery series “Sherlock,” where they play the fitting roles of the world-famous detective’s mother and father. As reported by the Independent, Cumberbatch shared, “It was nerve-wracking because they are actors as well, and yet they were brilliant and they were fantastic.” Fantastic they indeed were, as the two reprised their roles in two later episodes in Seasons 3 and 4.
